PINNACLE OF BURJ KHALIFA
2009
VSL performed heavy lifting of the pinnacle on top of the 828m high Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building and the tallest man-made structure, which is also the tallest skyscraper with the top floor’s roof at 623m and the building with most floors (160).
VSL lifted the 450t heavy pinnacle over a distance of 89m using a rolled steel pipe with a diameter of 2.1m and 60mm wall thickness. Five-metre-long segments were brought up by crane and assembled inside the tower itself at level 156, which is higher than 585m. Welding was carried out to full depth to increase resistance against fatigue caused by the continuous oscillating movement of the pinnacle.
