KOPPIGEN TIMBER BRIDGE

A wildlife crossing over the A1 highway in Switzerland was built using one of the world’s first post-tensioned timber bridges. VSL designed and installed the post-tensioning system for the 37 m main span, developing steel distribution plates with multiple anchorages to safely introduce high forces into timber beams. Prefabricated beams were partially prestressed off site, erected during night shifts, then stressed to final force, demonstrating the structural and serviceability benefits of post-tensioned timber.
