MOUNTAINSIDE INVESTIGATION WITH HELICOPTER LIFTING

The Hong Kong Government’s Drainage Services Department has a strategy to relocate surface service reservoirs into caverns to release valuable land. The cavern contractor employed Intrafor to undertake ground investigation to determine the geological, structural & hydrogeological properties of the rock using vertical and inclined drillholes to 187m depth. The works were undertaken on a remote mountainside requiring all plant to be mobilised by helicopter. To understand the magnitude of the insitu rock stresses 7no., Goodman Jack tests were undertaken, furthermore fibre optic arrays have been installed to measure changes in strain by optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) as the tunnelling proceeds.
